Every year the Midland Railway plays host to Indietracks and this year two regular festival goers – Ian Holgate and Brian Bryden – are undertaking a mammoth cycling challenge to help raise money for the Midland Railway.
From May 27 to May 29, the duo will be cycling from south London to Butterley Station at the Midland Railway – a distance of around 190 miles – all to raise money for the railway!
The pair talk a little bit more about why they’re deciding to take on this huge challenge….
Ian says: “I’ve been to all but one of the Indietracks festivals and have loved every golden moment of them. It’s partly the trains themselves, and the music, but lot of it is down to the Midland railway staff who are volunteers and do it for the love of it. Admittedly, I make a sterling effort to help increase their bar takings at the festival, but I wanted to more and chewed on it for a while. I can’t juggle or run marathons but I have got a bike with the right number of wheels. Also it’s a week before a kind of important birthday for me and so I love a cliché. That, and I can’t afford a big red sports car”.
Brian adds: “When Ian mentioned this caper I immediately offered to join him and immediately worried at the prospect of a 100 mile day. I’ve done a few longish rides but nothing of this magnitude, too late back out now though. Indietracks is very close to my heart as it’s given The Understudies some great times over the years and being a train driver I do have a passing interest in all things railway so please do donate whatever you can, I know even the smallest amount will be much appreciated by the midland railway folks. Ok, I have to go think about far more important things now, like what the hell am I wearing for this jaunt, dare I risk the lycra…. ?”
